An update to Verisk’s Wildfire (WF) model for the United States is scheduled to be released in June 2024 as a part of our suite of products. Verisk is presenting early insights to anticipated industry loss changes in this document to better inform your immediate risk management decisions or capital needs. A more in-depth discussion of the changes will be provided at the time of release in the formal release documentation.

This brochure provides an overview of the AIR Bushfire Model for Australia, where fires that once raged across grassland and forest burn today through highly developed commercial and residential areas, causing significant insured losses. The model employs several parameters that drive the generation of realistic fire perimeters—including available fuels, weather, and topography. The phenomenon of clustering—a distinctive feature of Australian bushfires—is explicitly modeled. To capture building and structural characteristics in fine detail, the model employs separate damage functions for 44 construction types, 48 occupancy classes, and several height bands.
